June 27th 2012

The GFA will be holding a Council Meeting in which it will propose new competition rules for next season. It will propose that the 1st division be increased to 8 teams, and the 2nd reduced to 6 teams. The leagues will be played over 4 rounds, but the 1st division will be divided into two pools, the Championship Pool and the Relegation Pool. Two rounds will be played normally between the 8 teams, and two rounds between the 4 who will be either in the championship or relegation pool.

This new format will probably find the approval of the 'big' in Gozitan football as this will help them maintain their first division status. Also it is rumoured that Ghajnsielem will find a way back to the first division after having been relegated to the 2nd division. This is due to

S.K.V.W. 1-2 Hotspurs

The third round game with Hotspurs started brightly with the Blue side dominating the opening exchanges and taking the lead through Sam Harland after 14 minutes.

Unfortunately the game turned on poor decisions from the officials. Sunday Baala broke forward and scored from a clearly offside position. Then things got worse as the officials added 3 minutes of additional time for no apparent reason, and Hotspurs took the lead during this period.

The second half produced few chances for either side and we remain 3 points behind Oratory in the race for 5th place.

We will be returning this year with all the rumors about possible transfers and rumors going around on our island. This season promises to be a very excited season as various players have been linked with possible movement from one team to another. Ghajnsielem had their application to join the MFA league turned down. We would like to know from the MFA or ( those who know the reasons) on what criteria they did this. Also from a meeting of the standing committee of the Presidents of the 1st Division teams it was decided that a competition rule will be put forward at GFA Annual General Meeting that the 1st Division teams can engage two foreigners instead of one. League Leaders Given a Scare

Ghajnsielem are top of the league and unbeaten. They boast ex-international players, and vastly experienced locals. But our boys gave them a scare in a tight game at Sannat Ground.

The wind played a part, and in the first half our opponents took advantage and put us under pressure. Our boys will be a little disappointed with the two goals conceded in this period. The first was a series of errors that led to the ball being scrambled over the line by ex-Valletta/Birkirkara striker Jean Pierre Mifsud Triganza. The second was a penalty after a late challenge in the box.

The second half gave us the advantage of the wind and we also used it well putting consistent pressure on their defense. Sam

Third Round Starts With Defeat

Round three began with a repeat of the previous week's fixture, as we took on Kercem again. Kercem had players returning to the starting eleven, but unfortunately suspensions meant that we were again very short of players.

The first half was very balanced, but in the final minutes before half time, Kercem's Brazilian striker, Cadu, was fastest to react to a poor clearance and finished well.

The second half started very badly for our boys and Kercem scored their second almost immediately. The team then produced a further 45 minutes which was well below par. Three more late goals made the scoreline much more dramatic than it should have been.

The only positive to take from this

Blues Beat Kercem in Thrilling Game

With several players suspended and others injured, our squad was extremely depleted for this game against 3rd placed Kercem Ajax. Youth player James Meilak was called in to sit on the bench for the first time, and Joel Xiberras was given a starting place after showing great work in training.

Kercem took an early lead from the penalty spot, but our boys hit back before half time with a contender for goal of the season. Predrag Djordjevic received the ball behind the defense and with his left foot produced a fantastic chip over the goalkeeper.

Hard Fought Draw with Oratory

The round 2 game against local rivals Oratory Youths ended in a 1-1 draw. After dominating the opening period, the Blues started to make errors and gifted our opponents an opening goal just before half time.

A very nice move produced the equalising goal after Sam Harland used good skills to turn and beat his man, sliding a through ball to Aji Adesina. Aji fired in a cross which was met by Chris Sciortino who drove the ball into the far corner.

Some harsh refereeing left us with 10 men after Joseph Refalo was sent off for a seemingly very soft offense. The ten men held on to record another point, and keep the gap between us to 3 points.

Derby Stalemate

Blues Suffer Narrow Defeat to Champions

A well struck free kick from ex Malta International, Daniel Bogdanovic was the difference between the two sides in a tight game against current champions, Xewkija.

The Blues had their own chances early in the first half and with a little more accuracy could have been ahead. Xewkija were playing their first game with star striker Dene Shields back in the side, but the SKVW defenders kept close watch on him, and on Thiago, the other foreign player.

League Leaders Fight Back to Beat Blues

Our second round game against league leaders Ghajnsielem was played in very strong winds which made the game difficult for both sides. Starting with the wind in our favour, we played some good football and threatened very early on through a free kick delivered into the 6-yard box by Eman Bugeja.

The first goal of the game arrived on 39 minutes when Predrag Djorjevic, playing his first game back, struck a fantastic shot from outside the area that flew into the top corner. This gave us a 1-0 lead at the interval, but with the wind seemingly getting stronger, we would have a tough task in the second half.

Blues Start Round 2 With Win

After an extended break, the 1st Division resumed last last weekend and our team secured an important victory to start round 2. Following a frustrating first round we found ourselves one place above St. Lawrence who occupied the last place. So the direct encounter with them was always going to be crucial.

The first half was closely fought, and it was clear both sides were a little nervous and not wanting to make mistakes. But the game was opened up when Aji Adesina played a great through-ball to set Eric Chidi one on one with the keeper. The game against Xewkija kicks off at 1pm at Sannat ground. We hope to have strong support. See you there.

The final game of round 2 saw us playing the bottom side, Munxar Falcons. The game started well for us and in the very first minute, an attack on the left flank via Daniel Bogdanovic led to a handball in the area from a Munxar defender. Unfortunately Fernando Giarrizzo's penalty was well saved and the game continued.

It would not be long however before another moment of quality from Bogdanovic put us 1-0 up. He received the ball on the edge of the area, bamboozled the defender on his back and then calmly slotted past the keeper.

A second was soon to follow after a strong run and shot by Peter Anizoba. The third came from quick thinking by Eric Chidi. A free kick from Bogdanovic was only parried by the keeper

S.K. Fight Back to Beat Kercem

It is not always possible to play your best football, and in the first half against Kercem in round 2 of the league, the Blues were far from their best. A penalty and a good strike from outside the area left our boys 2-0 behind at half time in a crucial encounter. A defeat would mean a 5 point gap to the top.

Fortunately, as we have seen several times this season, there is fight in our boys. The second half saw us get a goal back via the penalty spot after 15 minutes. A header toward goal from Fernando Giarrizzo was handled and new boy Daniel Bogdanovic converted the penalty to make it 2-1.

Kercem began to dig in and try to protect their lead. They are an excellent defensive team and with time running out it

Message from the President

I wish to thank, and show all my gratitude towards, all those true supporters who stood by our team last Sunday in the derby game against Hotspurs. It was comforting to hear some familiar voices from the stands, especially since events in that particular game were occurring thick and fast against our team. I am sure that no one can dispute the fact that this team does not lack fighting spirit and will fight and give their all whatever is thrown against them. These last two games are proof of that. Keep behind our boys because they deserve, and have earned your faith in them through sheer resilience and a never say die attitude.

Wanderers 1-1 Hotspurs

The round 2 fixture with our local rivals was a game that both teams needed to win. Hotspurs are fighting with Kercem for the final place in the championship pool while we are competing for first place.

The game started quietly with both teams happy to settle. The first real chance came for our team from a corner, when Eric Chidi saw his header come back off the crossbar. Eric was not to be denied however as with 30 minutes gone we started to dominate the game. A fantastic ball forward from Fernando Giarrizzo set Eric through on goal and he bravely beat the keeper to give us the lead.

Xewkija Find Late Winner

The second round league meeting between S.K. Victoria Wanderers and Xewkija Tigers produced drama and entertainment for the neutral. It is unlikely that there were many neutrals in the large group of supporters however and so tension was high in this important game.

Xewkija started brightly and in the early minutes produced a strong shot that came back off the crossbar. The Blues settled however and started to control the game. Unfortunately, we were to be reduced to 10 men after around half an hour of the game. A long ball forward was chased by Peter Anizoba. The goalkeeper also came out to try and get to the ball first. A narrow 1-0 victory over Xaghra means that S.K. will spend Christmas on top of the league. Nadur and Xewkija have played a game less, but this result puts some pressure on them with tough games ahead.

Following the good performance against leaders Nadur, there was careful preparation to make sure that we were not complacent against the bottom club. The performance indeed fell short of the levels of recent games, but importantly the 3 points were collected after a goal in the second half by Peter Anizoba. His clever finish from a good cross sealed the points in a game which was short on quality.

Wanderers Close Gap With Win

The latest round of the league saw us playing the leaders Nadur, who until this game had conceded only one draw. A win for us would make the gap at the top only a single point. A defeat would leave us adrift from Nadur and Xewkija.

Within 5 minutes, the blues were ahead. The Nadur defense was opened up and Ejofor Nkwocha beat the offside trap and calmly slotted passed the onrushing keeper to keep his excellent scoring run going.

The first half continued in a balanced way with both sides having periods of pressure in a game which both teams wanted to win. With half time approaching, a hopeful ball into the SK box was misjudged by the defense and Aliou Traore took advantage to level the scores.

Following our success against Xewkija, we were handed another tough game in the quarter final of the GFA Cup. Kercem had already won the First Division knockout competition this season, so it was clear that they would believe that they could repeat that success.

The game was well balanced in the first half, but there were few clear chances for either side. After the break, the blues almost took the lead immediately. The game began in a balanced fashion with both sides getting to grips with the conditions. Xewkija opened the scoring from a corner which was driven in low and hard. The ball was deflected into the net at the first post, and Xewkija held on to half time to go in with a 1-0 lead.

Joe Ross Makes Debut as S.K. Progress

Joe Ross Portelli made his first competitive appearance for the senior team during a 2-1 win over Mgarr in the second round of the U*BET FA Trophy. The game was played at the Centenary Stadium in Malta and although the result was pleasing, it came at a cost as 3 players had to leave the field with injuries.

The first 15 minutes of the game were well contested as Mgarr found a couple of opportunities due to early mistakes in our defense. However, as our players settled we gradually took control of the game and started creating many good chances of our own. After 30 minutes our progress was stunted as John Paul Grima hurt his ankle and was unable to continue. In the minutes that followed, Mgarr took advantage of

S.K. Win Appeal

Our team lodged an appeal with the MFA on the suspension of reserve goalkeeper Marlon Mercieca. An unjust report, and one which did not reflect the truth, was written by the referee, Joseph Camilleri, following the semi final of the Independence Cup, which our team won 4-1 against Kercem Ajax. The referee sent off two of our players from the reserve bench, and not satisfied with this, wrote a report that alleged that Marlon Mercieca pulled down his shorts and uttered vulgar words along with this alleged action.

Marlon Mercieca was suspended for 8 games by the Disciplinary Board of the MFA. Our committee appealed this sentence knowing that it was a blatant lie. Marlon Mercieca has given 27 years of service to this

Aji in Good Form as S.K. Win 3-0

Our team won 3-0 against Sannat Lions thanks to goals from Kenneth Mercieca, Sergio Paz and Ajibade Adesina. It was a deserved victory as our team dominated play for long periods of the game. The coach had to make some changes as Franco Magrin (back injury) and Sam Frank Bajada (suspended) were missing. In fact team captain Chris Sciortino had to play in central defense and Oliver Farrugia started as a right lateral defender. Both players had a good game as the captain, together with the always reliable David Monday gave a solid account of themselves and kept Sannat's dangerous forward, Sunday Baala, at bay. Oliver Farrugia also settled into his role and was very useful for the team when in possession and on

Xewkija 3-2 Wanderers

The 2012/2013 league campaign has unfortunately started with a defeat for our team. The game started well with an early goal from David Monday. After half an hour it was 2-0 after Kenneth Mercieca scored from a narrow angle. At this point we seemed to lose the momentum and were punished from a corner which brought the scoreline to 2-1. Just before half time we took another blow as Sanchez was forced off through injury. After the break we conceded from another corner, but at 2-2 the game was still open and chances were mostly falling for our team. In one case the Xewkija defense had to clear off the line and it looked like we were the more likely to score again. However, a second yellow card for Sam Frank

Independence Cup Final Report

The final of the 2012 Independence Cup promised much, with two strong attacking teams lining up against each other. On the day, our boys were a little flat and failed to deliver the levels expected by the fans.

Before kick-off, we delivered a protest by holding up the shirts of Marlon Mercieca and Sam Frank Bajada, who were shown red cards in the previous round. The decision made against those players seemed harsh and unnecessary.

During the first half, Nadur scored the only goal of the game. Apart from this incident, the defense was well organised with David Monday in particular looking very solid. Our team had the lion's share of the possession throughout the game, but Nadur defended well and

Sergio Scores Twice as Wanderers Make Final

Our team beat Kercem 4-1 to reach the final of the Independence Cup. We took the lead early on when Aji hit a strong shot from outside the area. The goalkeeper got a hand to the ball and he may be slightly upset not to have stopped it, but the ball found its way into the top corner. Almost immediately afterwards, Sergio Paz made a good run into the box and was brought down. Unfortunately, David Monday's penalty flew high over the bar and the score remained 1-0. Kercem sensed that they were still in the game and leveled the score when they reacted first to a loose ball from a corner. This time our goalkeeper got a hand to the ball but could only parry the ball into the net. The remainder of the first half

S.K. Victoria Wanderers 3-1 Victoria Hotspurs

Games against Hotspurs are always tough and last night's quarter final of the Independence Cup was no exception. The first half was a fairly scrappy 45 minutes with neither goalkeeper having to work too hard. Our team had more possession and also had the best chances, but the Hotspurs defense made some good blocks to keep us out. At the end of the first half Hotspurs were reduced to 10 men after their new central defender saw two quick yellow cards and had to leave the field. As the second half got under way, the ten men battled hard but mostly resorted to long balls directed at their tall Serbian striker. Eventually the resistance was broken and our pressure paid off when Sanchez showed great persistence to finish

On the other hand the Wanderers were punished for their lack of concentration during the

S.K.V.W. declared champions of the U/21 league

The Protest Board of the GFA has declared our U/21 team as champions of their section after upholding the protest presented by our club officials. The Board found that Nadur's Brazilian, Claudio Antunes was ineligible to play as he had a suspension which he incurred during Nadur's last match of the season of the senior team. One has to point out that our team had a player with a similar suspension and correctly our committee opted not to play him, a decision that vindicated this action.

Club President, Mr. Brian Azzopardi, Club Secretary Mr. Keith Vella Muskat and Club advocate and committee member, Dr. Samuel Azzopardi were the triumvirate that so ably defended this case. As stated before we would have

U/15 Girls win K/O competition

Our Girls won the U/15 final winning 4-1 against Sannat Lions. Emma Xuereb scored a brace and the other two were scored by team captain Michel Zuber and Samantha Vella. Sannat proved a hard nut to crack and our girls, who were the favourites for this final, only managed to forge ahead in the last 12 minutes. In fact after having taken the lead through an intelligent strike from Emma Xuereb, Sannat equalised immediately. Our girls were kept at bay in one way or another up to the last part of the game. It was Michel Zuber's goal that demoralised the plucky Sannat girls and two other goals ensued. After the game the players were presented with the cup and medals. Congratulations to the girls and a big well done to coach Savio

The Senior Girls win the K/O too!

After having won and been declared champions for the second year in a row our girls won another honour, that of the K/O competition winning against Xaghra 6-4. That's what they had done last year too. Emma Xuereb scored a hat trick, Joslene Gafa a brace and our captain, Melania Bajada added another one. It was a well contested final and this thanks to Xaghra who ran their hearts out for this match. Our girls looked tired as there were many of them who played 3 matches in 3 days and those who didn't, played 2 in 3 days. Still they were the better team except for the last quarter of an hour of the first half were Xaghra managed to get the draw after having been trailing our girls by two goals. They also managed to hit the

Protest of the Independence Cup

The committee would like to inform everyone that the protest lodged by Victoria Hotspurs as regards the final of the Independence Cup won by our team 2-1 was declared 'null and void' by the Chairman of the Protest Board of the Malta Football Association. This conclusion was reached because whoever wrote the protest did not quote the rules that according to him were breeched and did not even mention what was he expecting to get as a remedy if the protest was upheld. These two are cardinal conditions when filling a protest, stated clearly both in the MFA and GFA statute. The committee would also like to emphasize that even if there was no case of a technical error and we were sure that we would have succeeded in

Wanderers loose first league match

Sannat Lions started the Division I campaign on a very good note by obtaining full points from their match against SK Victoria Wanderers. I was a hard earned victory for Sannat, as they only managed to make sure with a goal scored in the final stages of the match. Although the two teams played in the lower division, Sannat seemed more experienced and took full advantage of Victoria’s moments of distraction during the match. Sannat Lions came out more aggressive and in the initial stages they created pressure over their opponents, where their Brazilian striker Ricard Saverino was a continuous threat to Victoria’s rearguard. In the 6th minute a header by Sannat’s Cristiano de Oliveira ended just wide and minutes later a good

S.K.V.W eliminated in extra time

Champions Ghajnsielem found it more difficult than expected against SK Victoria Wanderers and only managed to qualify for the semi-finals with a goal scored during extra time. It was a deserved qualification for Ghajnsielem, who managed to recover the score on two occasions and insisted for the decisive goal during extra time. Ghajnsielem’s debutant Renato Conceicao had a quiet debut. On the other hand Victoria improved from their last outing. They were a better side, especially with the return of Simon Gatt, Joseph Refalo and Daniel Muscat who were suspended for the match in the previous round. The Wanderers failed to register a surprise qualification due to their lack of experience, as they did not manage to defend their

Wanderers win City Derby

SK Victoria Wanderers obtained qualification to the quarter finals of the competition with a victory in the derby match against Oratory Youths in the penalty shoot-out. First division side SK Victoria Wanderers found it extremely difficult against their neighbours from the second division Oratory Youths. The Wanderers saw more of the ball during the first hour of play but as time passed by their poor physical condition became evident. Oratory took advantage and in the last phases of the match they were in a better shape than their opponents. Referee of the match was Mr. George Portelli.

Victoria expressed their best football in the early stages of the match. In the 5th minute Alan Cini had a good effort that hit
