Since we know that this story has made the headlines on the National television of Guatemala I as President of S.K. Victoria Wanderers would like to make the following statement.
We have been notified that a certain Spanish journalist has been putting the blame on our Club as regards the case Edison Ariel Estrada Sanchez. Contrary to what this journalist said we have done everything required as regards papers, contract, invitation letter and working permit. The player traveled from Guatemala and Mexico without any problems and it was only in Spain that he was held. According to the Guatemala Consul in Spain Ms Dora Olmeda the Spanish authorities first said that he did not have enough money for him to enter Europe, than his papers were written in English, then that the papers were copies of originals and finally that he had not a transit visa. When we did the papers in Malta the authorities in Malta assured us that he had everything required and in order .Also this is not the first time that we had players outside Europe joining my club and we always used the same procedures.
When we contacted them after the detention of Edison they confirmed once again that Edison had everything required to enter Malta and he had all the right papers to do so. I wish that the Spanish authorities clarify what was the real reason why Edison was detained and was so close to be deported back to Guatemala.
Now that everything has been settled we would like to thank the Consul Ms Dora Olmeda, The Guatemala ambassador for Spain, Mr Hernandez Mr Godoi 3rd secretary of the Republic of Guatemala, the Maltese Ambassador for Spain Ms Tania Vella, the Maltese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Samuel Azzopardi and Hon Frederick Azzopardi. Special thanks must go to Fr Anton Grech and to the General Secretary of my Club Mr. Keith Vella Muskat. Without the help of all these persons Edison would have had to return to Guatemala.
I wish also to give a big 'bienvenido' to Edison and hope and wish him luck for his new adventure with my club.
Brian Azzopardi
